Tips to hiring an electrician
There are a few keys things that you should look for when hiring an electrician
Hiring an electrician can seem like daunting task with serious financial and safety risks but there are some simple and easy steps that you can take to ensure that you hire a quality electrician who will complete your project up to standard.
First things first, never consider hiring an electrician who is not licensed. Every qualified electrician must have a current state license as well as proof of insurance (for a standard residential electrician this should be for around $500,000 in liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage). Request to see a copy of it during the first estimate inspection as this will be able to offer you a level of certainly that they are at least well versed in safety standards and techniques.
Additionally it is highly advised that as a potential client you ask for references from previous jobs similar to the one you are considering hiring them for as this will give you a good basis for understanding their work ethic and how previous clients judged their work. What’s more, research the electrician or the company online for customer reviews and industry opinions.
You will also want to ask the electrician about the details of the job itself with written estimates on costs and time needed to complete it. A quality and experienced electrician should be able to provide a fairly accurate timeline and cost estimate.
Finally you should be aware that the majority of electrical projects will need a permit issued by the local building department with the building inspector needing to sign off on any electrical work to ensure that it is up to code standards.
Also it is highly advantageous to remember that electricians with high qualifications and experience level will tend to specialise on one particular core area of the electrical industry. This means commercial projects, residential installations or even only service calls for emergency repairs. All electricians can install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a range of purposes including climate control, security, lighting, refrigeration and communications. Commercial electricians may also be able to install the electronic controls for machines in business and industry. It should be noted that while most electricians available tend to specialize in construction or maintenance, a growing number are qualified and able to perform both range of jobs.
While all have the same initial training and knowledge base, depending on the job you want to have completed will determine which type you will hire.
If you are still unsure about which electrician to hire for your project, contact the local home builders association who should be able to recommend a range of electricians based on what you need done and when.
