Electricity out for 7000 homes across NSW
Tuesday August 25, 2009
High winds resulted in power outages across NSW today, with over 7000 homes blacked out as trees and power lines buckled under the pressure of strong gusts of wind. Sydney, the Blue Mountains and other parts of NSW recorded gale-force winds ranging from 80 and 102km/h lashed parts of Sydney and the Blue Mountains to winds of up to 90km/h at 5am in Moss Vale, a State Emergency Services spokesman said.
These weather conditions, a result from a strong cold front crossing the state according to the Bureau of Meteorology, saw approximately homes and businesses lose power between Parramatta and Meadow Flat in the Blue Mountains in the early hours of this morning, with electricians working fast to restore normal supply.
Electricity was back to normal supply levels by 8.30am for around half the number of residences affected, although 2500 were still blacked out, as reported by an Integral Energy spokesman.
The power outages were concentrated in the Kings Park and Penrith areas, the spokesman said.
Further adding to the electrical supply concerns, another 2000 properties in Carlton and Bexley were without power from 5.30am this morning for over an hour after a tree hit a power line.
Traffic lights and intersections were also adversely affected by these power outages with electricians acting quickly to repair five sets of traffic lights along Forest Road between Stoney Creek Road and Oriental Street in Bexley.
